Around 40% of American Citizens do not have a passport…
“It has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time…”
— Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947
I always wondered why US citizens do not travel abroad as much as people from other nations. While definitely having the means, Americans are travelling the least (as a percentage of the population), out of any other civilized country. What a puzzle! Fear not… for I have found the answer 🙂
Arriving in Canada more than 20 years ago, and coming from an European country being on the large side (12th place out of 51), it only took a single trip to find out why.
Some time ago, we decided to go on a vacation and spend a few days in Montreal, followed by another couple of days in beautiful Quebec City and after that back to Toronto…
Travelling by car, at the end of our vacation, we realized how big Canada is, and by extension, the United States when compared to most other countries. Ontario, the province we live (and traveled) in is 4 times larger than our birth county!
Given the fact the US spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans, and from northern Alaska to the hot Chihuahuan Desert in Texas, the Americans are extremely lucky to have absolutely everything within their country’s borders.
I’ve only been to a few locations myself – such as San Diego, Las Vegas and Atlanta – but I can honestly encourage everyone to pick a few destinations from the United States and spend a vacation in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
